Summer technically begins on the longest day of the year.
And those long days, warm days make summer the perfect time
to enjoy outdoor activities of all sorts from swimming to
picnics to lounging in a hammock reading those books that
you put off reading all winter.
Summer is the best time of the year in which your mood
changes for the good. This is evident from the fact that
people suffering from mood disorders throughout the winters
start to feel nice. According to the scientists, mood
disorders are linked with the hours of day as well as light.
Researchers feel that the increase of Vitamin D in people,
which arises mainly from the sun, affects the mood to a very
great extent.
The layman's explanation for the mood swings in summer is
simply because it's a season that's associated with fun and
leisure. It's holiday time. Or, so it was till recent years.
In many countries in the world, almost all industries and
even towns shut down during the month of August. This is
because the heat is just too much for people to work in
buildings without air conditioning.
Which is important because during the summer it's vital to
prevent heat stroke and dehydration. These are very serious
medical conditions and people have to be careful not to
let themselves get dehydrated from the heat. So when taking
part in any sort of sustained phsyical activity outdoors
during the summer, be sure to drink plenty of water and take
frequent breaks to allow your body to cool down. Also, when
you're going to be outside during the summer, you want to
use a sunscreen to keep you from getting too much sun.
Besides the fact that sunburn just plain hurts, sun
exposure has been closely linked to skin cancers of all
types. Recently, however, experts say that getting a little
sun is good for you to increase your levels of much-needed
Vitamin D.
Using sunscreen is another way to keep you from getting too
much sun. Sunburns are not only painful, but sun exposure is
considered a cause for skin cancers of all types. However,
doctors say that getting a little sun is good for you to
increase your levels of much-needed Vitamin D.
This is not a contradiction. It merely states that excess of
exposure to sun is as harmful as total absence of it. So,
practice moderation. It is good to get a little sun and a
light tan. But it isn't a good idea to get a heavy tan. Just
use a mild sunscreen and you should be fine. Take special
care of children during the summer and see that they drink a
lot of water and don't get sun burnt. Restrict their time
outdoors during the summer to the morning and early evening
hours. This will decrease their risk of too much exposure to
the sun and to the heat.
